10 Communication terms

This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to the Social networking in Communication.

analyse: verb; Examine (something) methodically and in detail, typically in order to explain and interpret it.; Example: All grew over the period analysed.
data: noun; Facts and statistics collected together for reference or analysis.; Example: We can see from the data that, in general, there was a growing tendency to use more than one site.
growing: Becoming greater over a period of time; increasing.; Example: We can see from the data that, in general, there was a growing tendency to use more than one site.
internet: noun; The Internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world.; Example: One fifth of internet users did not use any social networking sites.
proportion: noun; A part, share, or number considered in comparative relation to a whole.; Example: In both years the highest proportion of users in any group fell into the ‘One site’ category.
report: verb; Give a spoken or written account of something that one has observed, heard, done, or investigated.; Example: The numbers who reported using two sites, three sites, four sites and five sites all grew over the period analysed.
sharply: adverb; With a sudden and marked change; dramatically.; Example: However, this group declined sharply from 36 percent in 2014 to 28 percent in 2015.
site: noun; A website.; Example: One fifth of internet users did not use any social networking sites.
social networking: noun phrase; The use of dedicated websites and applications to interact with other users, or to find people with similar interests to one's own.; Example: The bar chart shows the number of social networking sites visited by internet users in Canada.
tendency: noun; An inclination towards a particular characteristic or type of behaviour.; Example: We can see from the data that, in general, there was a growing tendency to use more than one site.
